Executive Director of the Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG), Dr. Stephen Yamoah has rebuffed claims suggesting the NPG is backing floating nuclear technology.
He made these comments on Thursday, October 2, during day two of the two-day “Workshop for Media Professionals” at the BPA Heights Conference Hall in Accra.
While addressing the media, Dr. Yamoah stated categorically that “Ghana without a nuclear power plant is much better than Ghana with a floating reactor.”
According to him, the floating nuclear is not in the best interest of the country as it is a means for people seeking opportunities to sell electricity.
“This whole proposal is not a project. It is somebody looking for a market to sell electricity,” he revealed.

He reaffirmed the NPG’s commitment to ensuring the success of the program, emphasizing that the “NPG’s method is in the interest of the country.”
“The nuclear agenda is not just about electricity and we have to be careful about that,” he advised.
Dr. Yamoah stressed that “the floating reactor concept is not feasible,” and for this reason, the NPG will never recommend such a concept.
The Executive Director also seized the opportunity to remind the public that even though the nuclear power plant project seeks to add value to Ghana’s energy and economic sectors, it is not a “quick-fix solution” to Ghana’s electricity.
Dr. Yamoah insisted that the no country uses nuclear to quickly fix electricity problems however, countries use nuclear to add value to their economic sectors.
“The nuclear should be the base of a beyond-electricity, as a catalyst to drive industry, to drive the economy, and to be able to add value to our raw materials,” he added.
