The National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan, launched by the Government through the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and the National Malaria Elimination Program, has the goal of eradicating malaria from Ghana by 2028.
This strategic plan serves as an enhancement of the existing malaria control program, symbolizing a renewed commitment from the Government of Ghana and all stakeholders to eliminate malaria and safeguard the health of the Ghanaian population.
At the event, Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare, the Presidential Advisor on Health representing the President, emphasized the national urgency of the plan. He called for collective action to reduce malaria cases, ultimately aiming for zero malaria-related mobility and mortality nationwide.
Dr. Asare urged state institutions to identify their roles in achieving a Malaria-free Ghana, and he encouraged all Ghanaians and private organizations to collectively prioritize malaria in Ghana’s developmental agenda.
Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, highlighted successes in the fight against malaria, citing a reduction in malaria-related deaths from 3889 in 2008 to 155 in 2022.
He expressed confidence that sustaining these efforts could lead to the successful elimination of malaria.
Dr. Keziah Malm, the Programs Manager for the National Malaria Elimination Program, emphasized that the plan, requiring a $3 billion investment, adopts a sub-national elimination approach.
This involves targeting various economic zones based on the prevalence of malaria in those zones.
