The New Patriotic Party (NPP), together with four other political parties, has announced that preparations are complete for a planned demonstration on May 5, 2025, against President John Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkonoo.
The participating parties, the People’s National Party (PNP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and the National Democratic Party (NDP), have strongly condemned the suspension, describing it as a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary.
Addressing the press, the Flagbearer of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, described the suspension of the Chief Justice as intimidation of women in power.
According to her, “President Mahama has shown disregard for women in government despite the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill, which ensures 30% representation of women in government.”
She criticized the President’s representations of women in his government, saying that “President Mahama gave 10% Cabinet positions, 16% Ministerial positions, and 14% Deputy Ministerial appointments to women. However, the few women in leadedship are now being illegally removed.”
Janet Asana Nabla urged all Ghanaians, particularly women, to join the fight against tyranny and injustice by participating in the Save the Judiciary Demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025.
Also, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Alhaji Frimpong Mohammed, accused the NDC government of using power recklessly.
According to him, there should a justification for the suspension of the Chief Justice however, all reasons brought so far do not appear to be valid.
He accused President Mahama of trying to undermine the independence of the Judiciary by attacking its members.
Alhaji Frimpong Mohammed condemned the attack on the Judiciary, urging for transparency and accountability in all processes.
He urged Ghanaians to join the demonstration and demand the reinstatement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
On his part, the General Secretary of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Jerry Owusu Appauh raised concerns about the appointment of Justice Gabriel Scott Pawamang, who is the Chair of the Investigative Committee, leading the probe into the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
According to him, “his involvement in this case compromises his neutrality and cast a shadow over the credibility of the processes.”
He insists that the Chair, Justice Gabriel Pwamang must be removed to ensure transparency as there are many other Justices who are equally qualified to lead the probe.
”The LPG is thereby calling on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately replace Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, as this is far beyond politics and bothers on safeguarding Ghana’s democracy and upholding the rule of law.”
