President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the rehabilitated and refurbished Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility that represents a significant investment in healthcare for the Upper East Region.
The transformation of the hospital, completed at a cost of $52 million, was made possible through a $20 million concessional loan from the Saudi Fund for Development, which funded the second and third phases of the project, along with an additional $32 million for critical infrastructure improvements.
During the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of accessible quality healthcare, stating, “Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right of every citizen, and it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that this right is not just theoretical, but practical.”
He highlighted that the revitalized hospital is a testament to his government’s commitment to ensuring that no Ghanaian is left behind in the pursuit of quality healthcare.
The hospital’s upgrades include a modern kitchen, a central sterile supply department, a mortuary block, staff accommodation, and the installation of medical equipment.
President Akufo-Addo also outlined his administration’s broader healthcare agenda, including the ongoing Agenda 111 initiative, which aims to construct 111 district hospitals and regional facilities across the country.
According to him, as of May 2024, work is actively progressing on 96 sites, with several expected to be completed by the end of the year.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo assured the nation of the government’s commitment to promoting health development in all regions, regardless of political affiliations, and emphasized the need to address the uneven distribution of healthcare workers, particularly in rural areas.
He urged the Ministry of Health to expedite the finalization of an incentive package to attract and retain medical professionals where they are most needed.
