The Minority Caucus of Parliament has refuted claims made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, indicating that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) implemented the 10% tax on lottery winnings (betting tax).
These comments were made by the former Minister for Finance, Dr. Amin Adam, on behalf of the minority in Parliament during a press conference, after the presentation of the 2025 Budget.
On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, the Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the cancellation of the betting tax, and other taxes and levies which were introduced by the previous NPP government.
According to him, the cancellation of these taxes will ease the burdens of Ghanaians.
However, the minority, led by Dr. Amin Adam dismissed these claims, stating that the NPP never implemented the betting tax, not to talk to collecting these funds.
“Ladies and gentlemen, betting that they say they have abolished, we never collected betting tax. We never implemented the betting tax,” he stated.
Dr. Amin Adam accused the New Democratic Congress (NDC) of deceiving Ghanaians into believing in the abolishment of a tax which was never implemented, stressing that it is not good for the people of Ghana.
“So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that was not implemented, is to deceive the people of Ghana,” he added.
