President John Dramani Mahama says despite over 90 percent of Ghanaians identifying as religious, the country is recording a rise in the levels of crime and immorality.
According to the President, the church has played a significant role in curbing the situation, and if not that, the situation would have been worse than it is.
Speaking to the clergymen on Sunday, March 2, 2025, in Kumasi, President Mahama asserted that religion has shaped morality despite contradictory claims of most people.
He says the Church has been very influential in the shaping of morality and values in Ghana.
“There is an often-heated argument that while more than 90% of Ghanaians profess to be persons of faith, immorality and crime are on the rise. My answer to those who make this argument is that the situation would probably have been fair worse if there were no Church,” he emphasized.
President Mahama stressed that without the existence of churches, society would be risk of descending into chaos as the Church is a moral guide to shaping the conduct of individuals and communities.
He added further by praising churches for their good works and encouraged others to acknowledge their efforts.
“Imagine a scenario where there was no Church, and people could act without any moral restraint. The situation would undoubtedly be worse,” he stated.
“The churches are doing their best, and their efforts must be acknowledged.”
President John Dramani Mahama used the opportunity to call for unity among churches and cautioned against divisions.
