WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY:MESTI LAUNCHES “ONE CHILD ONE TREE” INITIATIVE AIMS TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT
As part of activities marking the World Environmental Day celebrations, the Ministry of Environment,Science, Technology and Innovation, together with the government of Ghana, has launched the “One Child One” Tree initiative to protect the environment.
The initiative seeks to empower every child in Ghana to plant and nurture a tree, instilling a culture of environmental stewardship from a young age and contributing to national reforestation and climate resilience efforts.
Minister of Environment Science and Technology, Hon Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, is of a firm belief that the World Environment Day celebrations are a clarion call for collective global action to protect the environment upon which all life depends.
According to him,plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges yhe World is facing right now of which over 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally, with significant portions ending up in our oceans, rivers and in the forests.
He admonished that his ministry is coming up with a strategy to create awareness by educating citizens about the dangers of plastic pollution and the benefits of sustainable alternatives.
“We are currently implementing the National Plastic Management Policy and will ensure stronger enforcement mechanisms, incentives for innovation and support for green businesses, through interventions such as the “Circular Economy Framework for the Plastic Sector in Ghana (CEF-PS) Project”he added.
