We are not against Democracy Hub’s planned demonstration- Ghana Police Service

The Ghana Police Service has offered to provide security for the upcoming Democracy Hub demonstration scheduled from September 21 to 23, 2024, provided the organizers agree to change the proposed location.

The police have expressed concerns that holding the protest at Revolutionary Square, situated in front of Jubilee House, could jeopardize public order and safety.

The demonstration aims to address critical issues affecting the country, including socio-economic injustice, unemployment, rising poverty, state capture, nepotism, corruption, and the need for judicial independence. T

he police received notice of the planned protest on July 9 and conducted an assessment of the proposed location. Following this assessment, they concluded that the Revolutionary Square could pose a threat to public safety.

Despite the police’s request for an alternative location, the organizers have refused to comply. Consequently, the matter was taken to court, where on September 18, the High Court granted an order prohibiting the demonstration at Revolutionary Square during the specified dates.

Addressing the media during a press briefing, Director of Police Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, clarified that the police have not entirely banned the protest but are seeking a new location for it.

ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi emphasized that the police are ready to ensure security for the event if a new location is agreed upon by both parties.
