CHILD LABOUR ON THE RISE:ROMAN SISTER SOUNDS ALARM,CALL ON PRESIDENT TO ACT.
Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer Sisters Foundation(H D R S F)Accra in collaboration with Goaso Diocesan Development Organisation of the Catholic Church has organised “Child labor and girls empowerment advocacy in cocoa-growing communities particularly in Goaso- Acherensua and Konkontereso held at Acherensua Roman Catholic Church in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region to tackle the high rate of Child labor in the Cocoa communities.
Speaking at the event, the representative memeber of the Divine Redeemer Sisters Foundation in Accra,Sister Lucy Sasu has cautioned the government to tackle the growth of the child labor by initiative free education to the children’s level and especially to those at the cocoa-growing communities because growth of the child labor are critical issues that requires attention and action.
At the event, chairman also Chancellor and Cathedral Administrator,Goaso Diocese,Rev.Fr.Theophilus Akyeampong Pepra,urged parents to prioritize their children’s education and well-being over extravagant funeral expenses, He concluded that parents often spend large sums of money on funeral clothes and other expenses, which could be better utilized to support their children’s education and development.
Added voice was,Mad.Rosemary Kwakye(School improvement support officer—SISO),said many parents in the area send their children to work on farms at expenses of their education.children as young as 5-15years old are often seen accompanying their parents to farms which has negatively impact school enrolment in the district, noted that aside from child labor some children have dropped out from school to engage in illegal mining activities(galamsey), putting the region future at risk
