The call for a forensic audit of the voters’ register by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has sparked a debate about the most effective means of addressing discrepancies in the electoral process.
While some argue that a forensic audit is necessary to ensure transparency and accountability, others believe that a reconciliation process could suffice to resolve any issues identified.
Supporters of the forensic audit assert that it would provide a thorough examination of the Electoral Commission’s financial records and voting processes, helping to uncover potential fraud or misconduct.
They argue that such scrutiny is essential to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s democracy, especially in light of allegations regarding unauthorized changes to voter locations and discrepancies in the voters’ register.
However, critics, including the Executive Director of Your Procurement Eye, Emmanuel Tetteh Mensah, contends that calling for a forensic audit may be excessive given the nature of the claims being made.
He argues that reconciliation—a process involving the comparison of records from both the NDC and the Electoral Commission—could effectively address concerns about misplaced voters and incorrect voting center assignments.
According to him, this method focuses on identifying and rectifying errors through collaboration rather than assuming malfeasance.
Mr Tetteh Mensah emphasized that reconciliation can resolve discrepancies arising from human errors, such as mispostings or incorrect coding of voting centers.
He posited that both parties should produce their records for comparison to ensure accuracy and consistency, ultimately leading to a credible voters’ register that meets everyone’s expectations.
